Selenium – a powerful antioxidant and Essential Micro-Mineral

First a brief message as the information below is rather longer than a normal newsletter. We believe a brief background for our Food State Selenium supplement is important to consider in comparison to the traditional multi so called “natural” supplement forms of Selenium.

We believe that the information below is important for consideration; hence the overview below is presented to help your Selenium formula choices

Introduction

It is becoming more and more accepted that Selenium plays a vital role in human health. Selenium is a natural antioxidant that protects against many forms of harmful free radicals.

Epidemiological investigations have linked the paucity of selenium in the soil to increased incidence of heart disease, cell mutations and additional negative health issues.

A deficiency of selenium also contributes to premature ageing problems. Selenoproteins are important constituents of a number of enzymes with a range of functions including antioxidant function thyroid hormone metabolism

Poor soil selenium levels may result from;

  1. Glacial activity
  2. Overuse of nitrogenous fertilisers
  3. Precipitation of acid rain with its high sulphur content

Selenium is essential for human body as it increases immunity, takes part in antioxidant activity that defends against free radical damage and inflammation

Some Key Health Benefits of Real Selenium from Food

This Food State Selenium supplement is complete with the important carrier proteins (amino acids) and additional Food Nutrients. These additional Nutrients ensure delivery within the body is at optimum levels

  • Selenium is an essential nutrient for the creation of Glutathione Peroxidase considered as one of the most potent beneficial antioxidants created within the body.
  • Selenium is a key nutrient to help our cardiovascular system and also has an important role in helping to reducing blood pressure
  • Our Digestive System needs optimum selenium and people experiencing digestive system have often been found to be low in this important mineral according to research.
  • Research has shown that the optimum Food State Selenium provides a host of health benefits for the Nervous System
  • Selenium can help to lower Elevated Blood Sugar levels
  • Research has shown that Selenium is powerful mineral helping to fight Selenium may help to prevent Bacterial and Viral Diseases
  • Selenium is an important antioxidant that helps Fight Infections
  • Optimum Selenium is essential for the proper absorption of Magnesium
  • Selenium is an essential nutrient for the creation of Glutathione Peroxidase Enzyme considered as one of the most potent beneficial antioxidants created within the body.
  • Selenium is a powerful Antioxidant helping to defend our cells from a range of Harmful Free Radicals.

Important Selenium Note: Food State Selenium yeast has been documented by the European Food Standards Agency as being the safest and most bio-effective form of Selenium

How much Selenium do we need?

It is known that about seven out of ten persons are Selenium deficient due to the reduced dietary sources.

Many Health Practitioners are of course familiar with the selenium dietary sources and supplement sources. However, is our information much beyond mentioning Brazil nuts, some fish, meats and cereal sources?

Supplementation with selenium we believe is necessary for our immune system. We also need to be aware that the two commonly quoted sources of selenium in foods (Brazil nuts and some sea fish) may not be the overall best sources due to potential rancid fats in the Brazil nuts and heavy metal contamination of some sea fish.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) RDA for selenium is 70 micrograms/day to 350 micrograms/day. In the U.K the average daily intake is between 50mcg to 70 mcg.

A decline in blood selenium levels in the UK and other European countries has raised concern about possible public health implications, particularly in relation to cell mutations and cardiovascular disease.

Deficiency is linked with a wide variety of medical problems; however as we know an excessive intake can have toxic effects and may potentially even be harmful.

Selenium as a Food supplement

We need to be clear about the form of selenium being offered as a supplement.

There are essentially several different chemical forms of supplemental chemical selenium plus the selenium form known as Food State

Many Health Professionals together with clinical organisations internationally say we need about 250mcg to 350 mcg daily for good health maintenance.

The case for Food State Nutrient Selenium

Food State Selenium yeast has been documented by the European Food Standards Agency as being the safest and most bio-effective form of Selenium. Food State Selenium is far better absorbed and used (by the body) than inorganic selenium.

Yeast-bound selenium to be far more bioavailable and totally non-toxic in therapeutic doses

Food State Selenium is far better absorbed and utilised (by the body) than inorganic and chemical forms of selenium

In food’s the active component is always attached to the specific protein/peptides and will become a “targeted” molecule. This targeted molecule due to its ability to reach the appropriate receptor site will be more effective than an individual chemical form’s that are not in a bonded food matrix.

Targeted delivery technologies are designed to deliver measurable amount of selenium (as is the case with other Food State supplements) to a specific site. Targeted delivery does also improve the efficacy of a Food State supplement by routing it to where it is needed the most – the same principle as in natural food.

Hence, an important advantage of targeted delivery is the dose. Due to its effectiveness, targeted delivery allows decreases in the dose of ingredients needed in the finished product without sacrificing its benefits.

The Food State Selenium supplement has amino acids and other phyto-nutrients with which this mineral and as found in food. Food State selenium is the most effective naturally organic form which has been shown to be better absorbed and used than inorganic and other forms of selenium

Food State Selenium in the food matrix has been shown superior in comparative trials, bioavailability and clinical effectiveness.

The issue of mega dosing will be alleviated with Food State selenium (as is the case with other Food State supplements) as this active antioxidant is bound with a food matrix with a recognised protein delivery process

Note, in Peer reviewed and published clinical studies the Food State selenium (with Food State vitamin C) was shown to a significantly reduce the colonic crypt cell proliferation in patients with adenomatous polyps.

Food State selenium supplementation maintained the cell proliferation rates as a significantly lower level than the pre-supplementation levels

Non-allergenic – Food State Nutrients – Yeast Concerns

Despite the use of yeast during the mineral growing and bonding process, “Food State” products are non-allergenic. Allergies are always molecule specific and in order to stimulate the yeast allergy, the yeast must still be in possession of its long chain molecules.

During the growing and bonding process, the yeast is enabled to “take up”, and re-nature the mineral substance into itself, prior to the breakdown of the yeast cell wall. This makes it unrecognisable as a yeast molecule and it does not therefore trigger off the allergic response.

It is also worth noting, that because “Food State” products are retained in the body longer, and are more efficiently utilised, there is no risk of any detrimental mineral depositing, or symptoms of overdosing.

We can state that having the experience of supplying Food State minerals (for over 33 years) to medical doctors, clinics, hospitals and health practitioners throughout the world we have not experienced any allergic reactions, even in hospital wards that are designed to treat yeast sensitive patients.

Due to their bio-available status, and hence their low dosage requirements, there are no side effects to Food State products.

Contra-indications

There are no known contra-indications to Food State Selenium at the recommended intake.

The GMO status of Food State Selenium

This issue is taken very seriously indeed and all Food State Nutrients are checked by employing two scientific methods.

Every batch of Food State Nutrient supplements are checked with GC analytical equipment to make certain that there are no pesticides or herbicides residues. Also, from time to time the Food State Nutrients are also sent for independent PCR testing. This method clearly distinguishes between GMO and none GMO.

ASSURANCES

Food State Nutritional are free of wheat, gluten, soya, starch, live yeast, lactose, colours, flavours, sugars and preservatives.  Suitable for vegetarians and candida sensitive

Read the Label

Some traditional so called “natural” forms of chemically synthesised Selenium supplement forms that include

Methlyselenocysteine – also known by other names

This form is found in Garlic and Broccoli (a high consumption of both is required)

Selenocysteine

This chemical form may inhibit production of Insulin-like Growth Factor-1 (IGF-1) and cause the cause the depletion of vanadium – a valuable antioxidant. Vanadium levels are important to maintain due its important role in helping to lower blood sugar levels and lowering insulin resistance.

Selenodiglutathione – also known by other names

This substance is a metabolite of selenium and is also manufactured as a chemical preparation of selenium and glutathione

L-Selenomethionine – also known by other names

One of the more familiar chemical supplement forms of selenium. In foods there is no such thing as an l-form.  Only synthetic pharmaceutical chemicals have the l-rotation.

Pure L or l Selenomethionine is a manmade chemical which has never been part of our natural food chain

Selenium chelate Nature does not create amino acid chelates and no food contains it. While this is a reasonable chemical form however the Food State far out performed this form in clinical studies. We should remember that Amino acid chelates are loosely bounded amino acids and minerals. All the amino acid chelates are sensitive towards acidic medium and they immediately breakdown.

There is no single amino acid chelate that can tolerate acidic condition. To the best of our knowledge there is no single amino acid chelate in natural foods, vegetables, or plants.

The use of inorganic forms/salts of selenium should, we believe be restrictedly controlled because of the close proximity of the effective intake to the potentially toxic intake.
